Apple raises prices on MacBook and iPad due to memory crunch, hints at more to come

In a significant move, Apple has announced price increases for its MacBook and iPad models, marking its first official step to transfer rising memory and storage costs to consumers. This decision comes after CEO Tim Cook acknowledged that such adjustments had become necessary due to unprecedented challenges in the consumer electronics sector. On Thursday morning, Apple's online store experienced a brief outage as it updated to reflect the new pricing. The company stated, "The consumer electronics industry is facing an unprecedented challenge." They attributed this situation to the soaring demand for memory and storage, driven largely by the rapid expansion of AI data centers. Apple emphasized that they have never encountered such a rapid escalation in component prices before. As the company prepares for future price adjustments, it indicated, "We have reached a point where we need to begin raising prices on a number of products." Apple is aware that this news may not be well-received, but they are committed to finding solutions amidst the rising costs. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Cook described the current supply chain crisis as a "hundred-year flood," noting that he has never witnessed anything comparable in his four-decade career. Data from Counterpoint Research reveals that memory and storage prices have quadrupled over the past three quarters, as suppliers increasingly focus production on the high-bandwidth memory essential for AI servers. This memory crisis has proven advantageous for suppliers like Micron, which recently reported a staggering increase in revenue and an impressive rise in gross margins. Historically, Apple has addressed price adjustments by eliminating lower-cost options, making higher storage or memory configurations the new baseline, or encouraging customers to opt for Pro models. For instance, in May, the company removed the lowest-priced Mac mini configuration, resulting in the entry model starting at $799. Analysts like Tarun Pathak from Counterpoint Research predict that the surge in component costs could lead to an increase of approximately $200 per iPhone for Apple. He anticipates that overall price hikes will range from $150 to $200, with a stronger emphasis on higher-memory configurations over base models. Furthermore, the push towards AI capabilities is prompting Apple to focus on devices with enhanced memory, as all new iPhone models are expected to feature 12GB of RAM. This shift is crucial for supporting advanced on-device AI features, as the new Siri experience will only be compatible with the latest hardware. IDC estimates that about 54% of iPhones shipped since 2022 will not be able to utilize the full range of new Siri functionalities. This situation presents Apple with an opportunity to justify higher prices based on enhanced hardware capabilities rather than merely reflecting inflation in component costs. IDC anticipates that Apple's average selling price will rise by 12% this year, supported by a richer product mix and the anticipated introduction of a foldable iPhone.
