Anysphere has introduced an ambitious new subscription tier for its AI coding tool, Cursor, priced at $200 per month. This announcement was made in a recent blog post, highlighting the launch of the Ultra plan, which significantly boosts users' access compared to the existing $20-a-month Pro plan. The Ultra plan promises an impressive 20 times more usage of AI models from industry leaders such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and xAI. Additionally, subscribers on this tier will enjoy priority access to new features, enhancing their coding experience. According to Anysphere's CEO, Michael Truell, the Ultra plan has been made possible through long-term partnerships with various AI model providers. In recent months, major AI model creators like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind have also rolled out more expensive subscription options, ranging from $100 to $250 per month, aiming to cater to their most dedicated users. This trend indicates a growing market for premium AI tools, and Anysphere seems well-positioned to capitalize on it. Earlier this month, the company revealed that Cursor is on track to achieve an impressive $500 million in annual recurring revenue, with major clients including Nvidia, Uber, and Adobe. Anysphere has rapidly ascended in the tech world, becoming one of the fastest companies to reach $100 million in ARR, and its growth trajectory shows no signs of slowing. Notably, Cursor's ARR has surged by $200 million since April, illustrating its popularity among users. However, the competition in the AI coding landscape is intensifying. Several AI model providers that Cursor depends on are developing their own coding tools, which could pose a challenge for Anysphere. For instance, OpenAI has recently acquired Cursor’s competitor, Windsurf, enhancing its own AI coding product lineup. At the same time, Anthropic is advancing its own offering, Claude Code, which leverages its well-regarded AI models. The sustainability of Anysphere's growth may come into question as these competitive pressures mount. The AI coding market is becoming more aggressive, with strategies such as Anthropic limiting Windsurf’s access to Claude AI models to maintain a competitive edge against OpenAI. In response to these challenges, Anysphere is investing more heavily in the development of its own AI models that complement those from OpenAI and Anthropic. The introduction of the new “Tab” AI model in May, which offers suggestions for code modifications across multiple files, exemplifies this strategy. Despite the rising competition, relationships with partners like Anthropic appear to be stable, as suggested by co-founder Jared Kaplan's remarks about their ongoing collaboration. Nonetheless, the quest for user loyalty in this dynamic market is becoming increasingly fierce.
