OpenAI’s most capable AI model, GPT-5, may be coming in August

Recent reports suggest that OpenAI is gearing up for the potential launch of its highly anticipated GPT-5 model as early as August. Sources close to the company have indicated that preparations are underway, following a roadmap outlined by CEO Sam Altman five months ago, which aimed to unify the company’s diverse AI capabilities. In a post on X, Altman shared that the release of GPT-5 is imminent, generating considerable excitement in the tech community. According to Tom Warren from The Verge, Microsoft engineers started to bolster server capacities in preparation for GPT-5 around late May. However, technical challenges in testing and development have delayed the timeline. During a recent podcast appearance, Altman showcased GPT-5's impressive abilities, recounting an instance where the model answered a complex question that he could not. "I put it in the model, this is GPT-5, and it answered it perfectly," he remarked, expressing a mix of astonishment and unease at the AI's capabilities. The anticipation for GPT-5 has been building since the release of GPT-4 in March 2023. Initial rumors about GPT-5 began circulating as early as March 2024, but the company strategically held off on the release, reserving the name for future advancements. Reports indicate that the upcoming GPT-5 will have 'mini' and 'nano' versions available through its API, while the primary version will integrate a traditional large language model with a simulated reasoning model, making it accessible via ChatGPT and OpenAI’s API.
