OpenAI to release GPT-5 next month with nano and mini versions: What to expect?

OpenAI's highly anticipated GPT-5 model is expected to be unveiled in early August, according to a report from The Verge. This latest iteration will enhance the capabilities of the ChatGPT AI bot and is notable for being the first large language model (LLM) from OpenAI to feature unified reasoning abilities. CEO Sam Altman recently hinted at the upcoming release on social media, mentioning that GPT-5 will not only introduce new functionalities but also achieve significant milestones in AI performance. Although he acknowledged that GPT-5 won't reach the gold-level performance demonstrated in recent AI competitions for several months, he expressed confidence in its advanced capabilities. In a recent podcast, Altman shared a personal experience where GPT-5 provided an accurate response to a challenging email query he struggled to comprehend. He described the moment as a revelation, stating, "I felt somewhat inadequate compared to the AI's performance, but it handled the question effortlessly." Moreover, GPT-5 aims to simplify user interactions by eliminating the need for model selection, thereby streamlining the user experience. This model will integrate the capabilities of both the O series and GPT series, intelligently determining when to engage in deeper reasoning for various tasks. Following the release of GPT-5, OpenAI plans to discontinue the separate O-3 model, while GPT-4.5 will be the last version of the non-chain-of-thought models. Users of the free tier can engage in unlimited chats at a standard intelligence level, while Plus and Pro subscribers will benefit from higher intelligence settings. The new GPT-5 will also be available in mini and nano versions alongside the standard model. The combined reasoning versions will likely be accessible through both ChatGPT and OpenAI's API, while the nano version might be limited to API access only. Additionally, OpenAI is working towards launching an open-source model, which is expected to mirror the capabilities of the O3 mini reasoning model, although delays have been encountered in its development. While the excitement surrounding GPT-5 continues to grow, potential delays in its launch could arise due to development challenges or competition from rival AI models. As the date approaches, the tech community eagerly awaits further updates from OpenAI on this groundbreaking release.
