OpenAI is set to host its highly anticipated annual developer conference, DevDay 2025, this coming Monday. The event promises to attract over 1,500 attendees at Fort Mason in San Francisco, marking it as OpenAI’s most significant gathering to date. The program will include important announcements, keynote speeches from OpenAI leaders, and a special fireside chat featuring CEO Sam Altman alongside renowned Apple designer Jony Ive. The upcoming DevDay is shaping up to illustrate OpenAI's expanding influence in Silicon Valley, competing against industry titans like Apple, Google, and Meta. The company is currently developing an innovative AI device, a social media platform, and an AI-driven web browser aimed at challenging Google Chrome. This is a considerable evolution from the inaugural DevDay in 2023, where OpenAI primarily showcased ChatGPT and its API offerings. As competition intensifies, OpenAI has been compelled to enhance its AI models and reduce pricing to attract developers. The last year has seen rivals like Anthropic and Google significantly advance their AI capabilities for coding and web design, putting pressure on OpenAI to maintain its competitive edge. Meanwhile, Meta has been consolidating top AI talent within its Meta Superintelligence Labs, which poses a growing challenge for OpenAI. During the first DevDay, OpenAI introduced the innovative GPT-4 Turbo model and shared Altman’s ambitious vision for the GPT Store, a marketplace for AI agents. However, shortly after this event, Altman faced a dramatic leadership upheaval but successfully returned as CEO after intense negotiations. Last year’s conference was more muted, featuring important updates like an API for AI voice applications, but lacking major announcements. As DevDay 2025 approaches, speculation is rampant regarding potential unveilings. Attendees hope to see the long-awaited AI-powered browser or receive updates about the collaborative AI device being developed with Ive and former Apple team members. Additionally, there are expectations for news about the GPT Store, which has seen little discussion since its initial launch. The event kicks off at 10 AM PT on October 6, beginning with a keynote from Altman that is expected to feature significant announcements, live demonstrations, and insights into how developers are transforming the landscape with AI. This keynote will be streamed live on OpenAI’s YouTube channel, which will be the only remote viewing option. In-person participants will enjoy presentations from notable figures, including Cursor co-founder Aman Sanger, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, and Andreessen Horowitz Partner Kimberly Tan. OpenAI researchers, such as model behavior expert Laurentia Romaniuk and Codex lead Alexander Embiricos, will also share their insights. DevDay 2025 will include engaging experiences, such as the “Sora Cinema,” showcasing short films created by OpenAI’s video model, and a unique phone booth featuring a “living portrait” of Alan Turing that interacts with viewers. The afternoon segment will conclude with a “Developer State of the Union” led by OpenAI President Greg Brockman and product head Olivier Godement, who will reveal new capabilities and future plans for developers. Lastly, Altman and Ive will engage in a closing fireside chat centered on the art of building in the AI era, wrapping up the day’s events.
