Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to visit India this week after first office announced

Anthropic, the San Francisco-based AI startup, has announced plans to establish its inaugural office in Bengaluru, India, slated to open in early 2026. This expansion aims to tap into the burgeoning AI ecosystem in India and address the rising demand for Claude AI. Dario Amodei, the CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, is set to visit India this week. His agenda includes meetings with public officials and enterprise partners, with speculation surrounding a potential meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other cabinet ministers. In discussing the significance of this expansion, Amodei remarked, "India's AI ecosystem is poised to play a pivotal role in the global and democratic evolution of AI. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with Indian organizations to explore how beneficial AI can be scaled to meet the needs of all." Paul Smith, Anthropic’s Chief Commercial Officer, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the impressive innovation landscape in India. He noted, "The vibrant startup and developer communities, along with Indian enterprises, are crafting solutions that have a global impact on millions of lives." According to Anthropic's Economic Index Report, India ranks as the second largest consumer of Claude AI worldwide, trailing only the United States. The report indicates that a significant portion of this usage in India pertains to technical tasks, including mobile UI development and web app debugging. Notably, major Indian companies such as CRED are increasingly relying on Claude for their programming needs. Anthropic is also committed to enhancing support for Indic languages, with their AI chatbot already available in multiple languages, including Bengali, Marathi, and Tamil. Earlier this year, OpenAI, Anthropic's main competitor, revealed that India is its second-largest market, following the US, and introduced a new subscription plan to provide extended access to its GPT-5 model. This highlights the competitive landscape as AI technology continues to gain traction in the region.
