Anthropic CEO Amodei says Pentagon's threats 'do not change our position' on AI

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, made headlines on Thursday by stating that the company cannot ethically comply with the Department of Defense's (DoD) requests regarding their artificial intelligence technologies. He emphasized that threats from the Pentagon will not alter Anthropic's stance on the use of its AI models. The startup has been in contentious discussions with the DoD about the applications of its models. Amodei revealed that these negotiations are ongoing, with Anthropic seeking firm assurances against the use of its technologies for fully autonomous weapon systems or widespread domestic surveillance of U.S. citizens. In contrast, the Pentagon wishes to utilize Anthropic's models for a range of lawful applications without restrictions. In a statement, Amodei pointed out that while the Department has the right to choose contractors that align with its objectives, he hopes they will reconsider their approach given the significant benefits Anthropic's technology could provide to the military. Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell responded to Amodei’s remarks by asserting that the DoD does not intend to use Anthropic's models in ways that would contravene legal standards, such as for autonomous weapons or mass surveillance. He stressed the importance of the company agreeing to allow its models to be used for all lawful purposes, framing this request as essential to maintaining military effectiveness and the safety of service members. “This is a straightforward and logical request that aims to prevent any risks to critical military operations,” Parnell stated in a social media post. He reiterated the Pentagon's position that no company will dictate the terms of operational decisions, underscoring the ongoing tension between the two parties over the ethical implications of AI deployment in defense scenarios.
