Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei refuses Pentagon requests to remove AI safety restrictions

Anthropic, a prominent AI startup, is currently navigating challenging discussions with the US Department of Defense (DoD) regarding the modification of safety protocols surrounding artificial intelligence. CEO Dario Amodei has firmly stated that the company cannot ethically comply with requests to eliminate restrictions, which include a ban on fully autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance. In a recent statement, Amodei emphasized that the company’s commitment to safety remains unwavering, asserting, "We cannot in good conscience accede to their request." The DoD has reportedly threatened to terminate a significant $200 million contract with Anthropic and classify the company as a "supply chain risk" if it does not comply with the demands. Anthropic's resistance stems from its belief that AI has the potential to undermine democratic values rather than protect them. The company clarified that the issues of mass surveillance and autonomous weaponry were never part of its original agreement with the Department of War. Amodei stressed that such requests are beyond the capabilities of current technology to implement safely and reliably. Moreover, Anthropic has raised concerns about the implications of allowing AI-powered surveillance, arguing that it could jeopardize fundamental freedoms. The startup maintains that it will not support the development of fully autonomous weapons, citing the unreliability of current frontier AI systems. "We will not knowingly provide a product that puts America’s warfighters and civilians at risk," Amodei stated. As tensions rise, the conversation is set to evolve, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly seeking a meeting with Amodei to further discuss the situation.
