Anthropic tested removing Claude Code from the Pro plan

Anthropic has recently sparked controversy within the developer community by implementing an unexpected modification to its subscription offerings. The company indicated that Claude Code, a widely-used tool for agentic development, would no longer be accessible to users on the $20 monthly Pro plan. This revelation was highlighted by users across Reddit and X, who noticed that the pricing structure on Anthropic's website explicitly stated that Claude Code was not available under the Pro plan, although it remained part of the $100/month Max plan. New subscribers to the Pro plan found themselves unable to utilize Claude Code, while existing members continued to enjoy uninterrupted access. As confusion and frustration grew, Amol Avasare, Anthropic's head of growth, took to social media to clarify that this change was merely a trial affecting approximately 2% of new prosumer sign-ups. He explained that when the Max plan was introduced a year ago, it did not include Claude Code, nor did it support the Cowork feature or long-running agents. Avasare elaborated on the evolution of user engagement, noting that since bundling Claude Code with Max, the tool has gained significant traction, particularly following the release of Opus 4. The introduction of Cowork and the prevalence of long-running asynchronous agents have transformed how users interact with Claude subscriptions. Despite some adjustments made to accommodate increased demand, Avasare acknowledged that the existing plans no longer align with current usage patterns. However, the decision to run a trial on a small segment of new sign-ups while simultaneously updating public documentation to suggest a universal change left some users feeling perplexed and frustrated. In light of the feedback, the pricing page was promptly revised to confirm that Claude Code is indeed available as part of the Pro plan once more.
