Anthropic has introduced a new feature for its AI model, Claude, aimed at reviewing code, but it's already facing backlash from developers regarding its pricing and potential implications for senior engineers. The company announced this latest development in a blog post, highlighting that Claude's Code Review is engineered to identify intricate issues and provide solutions for bugs. While this feature is designed to deliver deeper insights, it comes with a higher price tag compared to simpler alternatives, such as the Claude Code GitHub Action. According to Anthropic, the reviews are priced based on token usage, typically ranging from $15 to $25 per pull request, with costs varying depending on the size and complexity of the changes proposed. Thariq Shihipar, an engineer at Anthropic, defended the new feature on social media, stating it utilizes significantly more computational resources and is capable of detecting more complex bugs. His comments followed criticism from Daniel Ávila, head of AI at the fintech startup Hedgineer, who expressed disappointment with the feature, claiming it offers no substantial enhancements over existing tools. Developer reactions have been mixed, with some questioning the logic behind the pricing. Jean P.D. Meijer, a software engineer and startup founder, expressed disbelief at the costs associated with the Code Review feature, comparing it unfavorably to other code review applications that offer unlimited subscriptions. Karan Kendre, another developer, echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that if Claude is capable of refining code, it should also be able to generate it correctly from the start, rather than charging for subsequent reviews. Another user highlighted the financial impact of the new feature, suggesting that it effectively places a monetary value on senior developers' expertise. Concerns over rising costs aren't unique to Anthropic. Billionaire investor Chamath Palihapitiya recently revealed that his software startup is reevaluating its AI expenses due to soaring costs, which have tripled since last November. He noted that his company, 8090, is projected to spend around $10 million annually on AI, citing various services as contributors to this spike in expenses. As the landscape of AI tools continues to evolve, developers are left grappling with the implications of these advancements on their roles and budgets.
