Ahead of its IPO, Anthropic’s Daniela Amodei shrugs off doubts about AI’s returns

Anthropic has become a hot commodity among private investors, showing tremendous growth momentum in the AI sector. Reports indicate that the company's recent fundraising round, which aimed for a staggering $65 billion at a valuation of $965 billion, was highly oversubscribed, reflecting strong investor interest. As the company gears up for a public listing, it has confidentially filed for an IPO. Co-founder Daniela Amodei shared insights at the Bloomberg Tech conference, emphasizing the importance of capital for the company's future. "Training models and serving inference requires substantial upfront investment," she stated. Amodei believes that as the industry evolves, companies pushing the boundaries of AI will increasingly rely on public markets for financial support. Anthropic's growth trajectory has been remarkable, with annualized revenue skyrocketing to over $47 billion as of May, a significant increase from approximately $9 billion just two years prior. However, the sustainability of this growth is under scrutiny. For instance, companies like Uber have noted mixed results from their AI investments, prompting concerns that businesses might tighten their budgets and hinder sector expansion. Despite these challenges, Amodei remains optimistic about the potential of AI. She noted that businesses are still in the early stages of understanding how to effectively leverage AI technologies across various fields, including coding, financial services, and healthcare. "As companies become more familiar with these tools, we will collectively learn to incorporate them into our daily operations, ultimately realizing greater value," she explained. Amodei also addressed Anthropic's strategy regarding compute capacity, clarifying why the company is not following competitors like OpenAI and Elon Musk's xAI in building its own data centers. "Our approach has always been to prepare for the best outcome without overcommitting to compute resources we might not fully utilize," she said. This strategic mindset led to a surprising partnership with xAI, recently revealed in SpaceX’s S-1 filing, which will provide Anthropic with compute capacity at a significant cost of $1.25 billion monthly.
