Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, revealed that the company's growth trajectory has far exceeded expectations, with a staggering 80-fold increase in revenue and usage during the first quarter on an annualized basis. This surge has created significant challenges in keeping pace with demand. At a recent developer conference in San Francisco, Amodei explained, "That is the reason we have had difficulties with compute." To address these challenges, Anthropic is actively working to enhance its computing capacity. Amodei assured attendees that the company is striving to expand its resources as swiftly as possible, stating, "We will pass that compute on to you as soon as we can." These remarks followed the announcement of a pivotal agreement with SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, granting Anthropic access to the entirety of the computing power at the Colossus 1 data center located in Memphis, Tennessee. This partnership will provide Anthropic with over 300 megawatts of capacity, essential for sustaining their rapid growth. The remarkable expansion of Anthropic is largely attributed to the rising popularity of its Claude AI models, especially following the launch of Claude Code last year, which has revolutionized software development practices. The company is also in discussions with potential investors to secure funds at a remarkable valuation of $900 billion, which would surpass that of OpenAI. Amodei noted the swift adoption of new technologies by software engineers, indicating that this trend is a precursor to broader economic transformations driven by AI. However, he acknowledged the strain on Anthropic's infrastructure due to the high demand for Claude, which has affected reliability and performance, particularly during peak usage times. Recently, Anthropic has signed several significant computing agreements, including a multibillion-dollar deal with Amazon. Despite facing challenges such as a complicated relationship with the U.S. government, which has labeled the company a supply chain risk, Anthropic's popularity continues to soar. Amodei remarked that the current pace of growth is "just crazy" and expressed a desire for a "more normal" rate of expansion.
