Anthropic CEO warns tech titans not to dismiss the public's AI concerns: 'You're going to get a mob coming for you'

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has issued a stark warning to major players in the AI sector regarding the growing public apprehension about artificial intelligence. In a recent interview with Axios, Amodei stated, "You can't simply declare that we're going to generate vast wealth, primarily benefiting ourselves as we become trillionaires, and expect no backlash." He emphasized that neglecting the public's worries could lead to significant repercussions for these companies. This warning follows the release of Amodei's extensive 19,000-word essay titled "The Adolescence of Technology,” where he articulates his vision for the future of AI. He posits that while the technology holds the potential to create immense wealth, it must be treated as a serious societal challenge. In both his essay and interview, Amodei advocates for comprehensive tax reforms to ensure a fair distribution of the wealth generated by AI advancements. He remarked, "The taxation we need isn't the traditional kind; it must reflect a reality in which individuals can become trillionaires." Although he refrained from detailing specific tax measures in his essay, he mentioned that these could either be general or specifically aimed at AI firms. Amodei warned that neglecting to implement proactive tax policies could result in poorly designed alternatives. Furthermore, he has advised lawmakers to not only pursue progressive taxation but also focus on AI transparency and restrict the flow of semiconductor technology to China. Notably, Amodei differentiates himself from many tech leaders with a more pessimistic perspective on AI's implications. He acknowledges, however, that public concerns about AI are not always precisely directed. For instance, he noted that the water usage of data centers is minimal, and while worries about electricity costs are valid, they represent only a small facet of the broader dialogue. According to Amodei, the central issue is not just about utility bills but about ensuring equitable access to the significant wealth that AI will create.
