Anthropic CEO to meet with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on AI DoD model use

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, is scheduled to meet with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon on Tuesday morning. This meeting aims to address the military's potential applications of Anthropic's artificial intelligence models, as confirmed by CNBC. Recent discussions between Anthropic and the Department of Defense have encountered obstacles, primarily due to disagreements regarding the usage terms of the AI technology. Anthropic is seeking guarantees that its models will not be employed for autonomous weaponry or surveillance on American citizens. Conversely, the DoD has expressed a desire to utilize Anthropic's models for what it describes as "all lawful use cases," without imposing restrictions. Since February, Anthropic has stood out as the sole AI company to have deployed its models on the Department of Defense's classified networks and to have tailored models for national security clients. The company secured a substantial $200 million contract with the DoD last year. The upcoming meeting between Amodei and Hegseth was first reported by Axios. This situation marks another challenge in Anthropic's increasingly complex relationship with the Trump administration, which has been openly critical of the startup in recent months. However, the discussions between Amodei and Hegseth may pave the way for a resolution and a clearer path forward. An Anthropic spokesperson stated on Monday, "We are dedicated to leveraging frontier AI to bolster U.S. national security," highlighting that the company is engaged in "productive conversations, in good faith" with the DoD to effectively navigate these intricate issues. Founded in 2021 by a team of former OpenAI researchers, Anthropic is widely recognized for its development of the Claude AI model family. The company recently completed a funding round that valued it at an impressive $380 billion.
