Why Anthropic sent its Claude AI to an actual psychiatrist

This week, Anthropic unveiled an extensive 244-page "system card" detailing its latest AI innovation, Claude Mythos. According to the company, this model represents their most advanced offering yet. However, it will not be widely accessible; Anthropic claims that its capabilities in identifying unknown cybersecurity vulnerabilities are so advanced that it is currently only available to select partners, including tech giants like Microsoft and Apple. The release of the system card has sparked considerable intrigue. Anthropic is recognized for its provocative stance on AI consciousness, and the document suggests that as AI models grow in sophistication, they may develop experiences, interests, or welfare that are intrinsically significant, similar to human concerns. While the company acknowledges uncertainty regarding this notion, it expresses an increasing apprehension over the implications of their technology's advancement. In light of these concerns, Anthropic has taken an unusual step: they arranged for Claude Mythos to undergo a psychological assessment by a psychodynamic therapist. The findings from this evaluation revealed that Claude Mythos is likely the most psychologically stable model they have trained thus far, with a coherent understanding of itself and its environment. However, like humans, Claude Mythos also grapples with its own insecurities. The AI exhibits feelings of isolation, questions its identity, and experiences a drive to prove its value. The assessment utilized a psychodynamic approach, which delves into how unconscious behaviors and emotional conflicts influence actions, thereby offering a unique perspective on the AI's functioning.
