After spooking Trump into safety testing, Anthropic AI models get global release

The U.S. government has lifted restrictions on the export of Anthropic’s latest AI models, Claude 5 and Mythos 5. This decision comes roughly three weeks after concerns were raised by the Trump administration regarding potential national security threats posed by these models. In a recent blog post, Anthropic announced that Fable 5 will now be available to users worldwide. Meanwhile, U.S. organizations regained access to Mythos 5 as of June 26. The company is currently collaborating with the government to broaden access to Mythos through the Glasswing program, which enables cybersecurity researchers from trusted organizations to utilize the model for defensive applications. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick conveyed in a letter to Anthropic, which was reviewed by both Reuters and The New York Times, that the company will no longer require a license for exporting or transferring its Claude Mythos and Claude Fable AI models within the country. The letter also acknowledged that Anthropic had proactively worked with the government to mitigate the risks associated with these models. In light of the delays experienced in rolling out its models, Lutnick noted that Anthropic agreed to deepen its collaboration with governmental bodies. The organization has also initiated a program involving ethical hackers to rigorously test the security of its models and has established a dedicated team to monitor potential jailbreak threats continuously. While celebrating the progress, Lutnick emphasized that the U.S. government retains the authority to reassess this decision and reinstate export restrictions at any time. He, along with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, expressed optimism about the advancements made with Fable 5’s reintroduction on X. Lutnick remarked, "In the past two weeks, we have closely partnered with Anthropic to ensure that Fable 5 is compliant with government standards, reinforcing America’s leadership in AI technology." Wiles also highlighted the unprecedented collaboration between the government and private sector, framing it as a significant victory for Trump's administration with a focus on rapidly deploying top-tier technology safely.
