Anthropic has stepped into the competitive arena of AI agents capable of taking over desktop tasks on your computer. The company's latest innovation, Claude Code, along with its user-friendly counterpart Claude Cowork, can now directly interact with your screen, allowing them to open files, utilize browsers, and execute development tools automatically as needed. When feasible, Claude Code and Cowork will prioritize using Connectors to manage external applications or data sources. However, in situations where these connections are unavailable, these tools will seek permission to interact directly with the user's machine, enabling them to click, scroll, and explore to accomplish assigned tasks. This capability can also be initiated and controlled remotely through Claude’s Dispatch tool, provided the target computer remains powered on. Currently, this feature is available to Claude Pro and Max subscribers using MacOS, presented as a “research preview.” Anthropic has cautioned users that this system may not always function flawlessly, indicating that complex tasks might require multiple attempts. The process of completing tasks through direct computer interaction may be slower and more prone to errors compared to using Connectors, as per the company's statements. The introduction of such a tool, which can explore your desktop at its discretion, raises valid security concerns among users, especially in light of recent reports highlighting security vulnerabilities associated with AI systems accessing sensitive information.
