Anthropic CEO stands firm as Pentagon deadline looms

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, expressed his unwavering stance on Thursday regarding the Pentagon's request for unrestricted access to the company's AI systems. In a detailed statement, he emphasized that he cannot, in good conscience, comply with the military's demands. Amodei articulated Anthropic's belief that military decisions should rest with the Department of War rather than private enterprises. He raised concerns about certain applications of AI, asserting that they might threaten democratic values rather than uphold them. Specifically, he cited two scenarios: the mass surveillance of American citizens and the deployment of fully autonomous weapons lacking human oversight. The Pentagon contends that it should be able to utilize Anthropic's AI model for any lawful purpose, arguing that a private company should not dictate its use. This declaration came just before a critical deadline set for Friday at 5:01 p.m., as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth pressured Anthropic to adhere to his demands or face potential repercussions. In an effort to compel compliance, the Department of Defense has attempted to categorize Anthropic as a supply chain risk, a label typically reserved for foreign adversaries, or invoke the Defense Production Act, which would allow the government to mandate the company to prioritize military needs. Amodei highlighted the irony in these threats, pointing out that one categorizes Anthropic as a security risk while simultaneously branding its AI technology as vital for national security. He further stated that while it's within the Department's rights to select contractors that align with its objectives, he hopes they will reconsider given the significant value Anthropic's technology brings to the armed forces. Anthropic is currently the only advanced AI lab equipped with systems ready for military classification, although reports suggest that the DOD is preparing xAI for similar roles. Amodei concluded by expressing a strong desire to continue supporting the Department of Defense under the requested safeguards. However, he also affirmed that if the Department opts to sever ties with Anthropic, the company would facilitate a seamless transition to another provider to prevent any disruption to military operations or planning.
