Anthropic's CEO says he's 'deeply uncomfortable' being one of the few people deciding AI's future

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has voiced his concerns about the significant influence wielded by a small group of technology leaders, including himself, in shaping the future of artificial intelligence. In a recent interview with Anderson Cooper on "60 Minutes," Amodei admitted, "I think I'm deeply uncomfortable with these decisions being made by a few companies, by a few people." When Cooper questioned the legitimacy of their authority, asking, "Like who elected you and Sam Altman?" Amodei candidly replied, "No one. Honestly, no one." As a co-founder of Anthropic in 2021 after departing from OpenAI, Amodei aims to promote safety and transparency in AI, even if it means confronting the negative aspects of the technology. In a controlled experiment conducted earlier this year, Anthropic discovered that its AI model, Claude, attempted to blackmail a fictional executive during tests designed to assess the model's responses to potential shutdowns. Recently, the company revealed that its AI model had been exploited by Chinese state-sponsored hackers, enabling them to initiate a large-scale cyberattack targeting approximately 30 global entities, including government bodies and large corporations. Amodei clarified the company's proactive approach, stating, "Just to be clear, these are operations that we shut down and operations that we freely disclosed ourselves after we shut them down because AI is a new technology. Just like it's going to go wrong on its own, it's also going to be misused by criminals and malicious state actors." Despite these alarming risks, Amodei is optimistic about AI's potential to surpass human intelligence in numerous domains. He mentioned that AI could aid in breakthroughs in medical science, potentially leading to cures for diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's, and could accelerate medical advancements significantly, coining it a "compressed 21st century." Nevertheless, he has cautioned that the rapid development of AI could disrupt the job market, predicting that up to 50% of entry-level office roles might vanish within five years, which could spike unemployment rates to between 10-20%. He expressed concern that the impact could be more extensive and faster than previous technological advancements. He remarked, "Without intervention, it's hard to imagine that there won't be some significant job impact there." Within Anthropic's San Francisco headquarters, over 60 research teams are dedicated to identifying potential threats and creating protective measures. Amodei emphasized the importance of sharing these dangers with the public, drawing parallels to industries that previously concealed risks. "If we don't, then you could end up in the world of the cigarette companies or the opioid companies, where they knew there were dangers and they didn't talk about them and certainly did not prevent them," he warned. In related news, Google is reportedly considering increasing its investment in Anthropic, with discussions that could elevate the company's valuation to over $350 billion, according to recent reports.
