Dario Amodei on Anthropic's Pentagon spat: 'Disagreeing with the government is the most American thing in the world'

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has spoken out regarding the company's refusal to comply with the Pentagon's conditions for its AI model, Claude. He emphasized that the decision was rooted in exercising their First Amendment rights. In an interview with CBS News, Amodei stated, "Disagreeing with the government is the most American thing in the world, and we are patriots in everything we have done here." In a blog post earlier this week, Amodei expressed that Anthropic could not, in good conscience, accept the Defense Department's demands. He reiterated the company's commitment to certain ethical boundaries, highlighting that their technology would not be utilized for mass domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. This statement followed an ultimatum from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who warned that Anthropic would be blacklisted unless it agreed to the military's terms. On social media, Hegseth declared that no entities associated with the US military would be permitted to work with Anthropic. The situation escalated further when former President Donald Trump instructed all federal agencies to cease using products from Anthropic, labeling the company as a "radical left, woke company" on his Truth Social platform. Amodei noted that the company has yet to receive any formal communication regarding its relationship with the Defense Department, pointing out that their only information has come through social media. He assured that once they receive formal action, they would assess it and consider challenging it legally. Meanwhile, in a contrasting development, OpenAI has secured a deal with the Defense Department to deploy its AI models, as confirmed by CEO Sam Altman late last week.
