In a significant move, Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei declared that the company cannot agree to the Pentagon's terms regarding the use of its AI model, Claude. This announcement follows a stark ultimatum from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who indicated that failure to comply could result in Anthropic being blacklisted. Former USAF Lt. Gen. Jack Shanahan, a key figure in military AI efforts, emphasized that Anthropic is genuinely committed to aiding the government, stating the company is not merely playing games. Shanahan currently serves as a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, where he provides insights on AI's role in national security. Palmer Luckey, the founder of defense tech firm Anduril, highlighted the historical precedent set by President Harry S. Truman in 1948 when he compelled railway companies to assist the military during a strike. Luckey argued on social media that while the President can take such actions, it would be unprecedented for private companies to be mandated to collaborate with the military. He also stressed the importance of keeping military policy in the hands of elected leaders rather than corporate executives, a principle foundational to Anduril's operations. Anduril, which has rapidly secured various defense contracts since its inception in 2017, is currently vying to develop the US Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft, marking its significant involvement in defense technology. Dean Ball, a former AI advisor in the Trump administration, criticized the Pentagon's conflicting stance of designating Anthropic as a security risk while simultaneously asserting the necessity of its models for military applications. Ball described this situation as "a whole different level of insane." Political science professor Michael McFaul praised Amodei's principled response, calling it strong and reasonable. He commended the company's stance, noting that many organizations have capitulated under lesser pressures than what Anthropic currently faces. Thomas Wright, a former senior director at the National Security Council, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the courage it takes for Anthropic to uphold its values in the face of substantial financial risks.
