Claude Code rolls out a voice mode capability

Anthropic has introduced an exciting new feature, Voice Mode, for its AI coding assistant, Claude Code. This innovation aims to enhance the coding experience by enabling developers to engage in hands-free, conversational coding. Thariq Shihipar, an engineer at Anthropic, shared the news of this gradual rollout on social media earlier this week. Currently, Voice Mode is accessible to approximately 5% of users, with a more extensive rollout anticipated in the coming weeks. This feature allows users to communicate with Claude Code through spoken commands, streamlining the coding process. By simply typing "/voice" to activate it, users can dictate commands such as, "refactor the authentication middleware," and Claude Code will seamlessly execute the request. As the rollout continues, users will be notified via a message on the welcome screen once they gain access. However, details regarding potential limitations of the new feature remain unclear, including whether there are restrictions on the number of voice interactions or specific technical constraints. Additionally, it is uncertain whether this capability was developed in partnership with a third-party AI voice provider, such as ElevenLabs, as discussions between the two were previously reported. Voice Mode follows the earlier launch of a similar feature for the standard Claude chatbot in May, which allows users to perform various general-purpose tasks via voice commands. The competitive landscape for AI coding assistants is intense, with major players like Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Google, and OpenAI competing for developers' attention. Nonetheless, Claude Code has emerged as one of the most popular tools available today. In February, Anthropic announced that Claude Code's run-rate revenue exceeded $2.5 billion, marking a significant increase since the start of 2026, alongside a doubling of weekly active users since January. The Claude mobile app has also experienced substantial growth, especially after the company declined a request from the Department of Defense to utilize its AI for domestic surveillance or autonomous weaponry. Following this decision, the app surged to the top of the U.S. App Store charts, surpassing ChatGPT.
