Anthropic has officially launched its latest AI model, Claude Opus 5, which the company claims is its most efficient and high-performing version yet. This new model surpasses its predecessor, Claude Fable 5, in various evaluations related to coding and knowledge work, and is designed for daily use, as highlighted in a recent blog post. What sets Opus 5 apart is its affordability; it is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, making it a more economical option compared to Fable 5, which costs double. This move comes at a time when businesses are increasingly cautious about AI expenses and are seeking clearer returns on investment from their technology expenditures. In a competitive landscape that includes major players like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, Anthropic is responding to feedback from enterprises that prioritize value in AI solutions. Dianne Penn, the head of product management for research at Anthropic, emphasized the importance of balancing cost with quality, stating, "If it's a cheaper model or a cheaper offering, but it's not accomplishing a similar level of quality, it's actually not useful." The company has faced significant scrutiny since the release of Claude Mythos Preview in April, which was noted for its capabilities in cybersecurity, particularly in identifying and exploiting software vulnerabilities. Following this, Anthropic introduced Mythos 5 and Fable 5, both of which were praised for their advanced features. However, access to these models was temporarily suspended due to compliance issues with government export controls related to national security, which were resolved after negotiations. While Opus 5 is positioned as a strong contender in the AI market, it is noted that it does not yet match Mythos 5 in specialized areas like offensive cybersecurity and biological research. Nonetheless, Anthropic is committed to ongoing partnerships with government agencies to ensure the responsible deployment of its technologies, including the new Opus 5 model.
