On Monday, Anthropic introduced a web application for its popular AI coding assistant, Claude Code. This innovative tool allows developers to create and oversee multiple AI coding agents directly from their browsers. The web version of Claude Code is currently being rolled out to subscribers of Anthropic’s Pro plan, priced at $20 per month, along with its premium Max plans at $100 and $200 per month. Users can access Claude Code on the web by visiting claude.ai, the same portal for Anthropic’s consumer chatbot, and navigating to the “Code” tab. This launch signifies Anthropic’s effort to expand Claude Code beyond its initial command-line interface, aiming to enhance accessibility for developers. With fierce competition in the AI coding tool market, tech companies are striving to differentiate their offerings. Once the leader in this domain, Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot now faces competition from emerging tools developed by Cursor, Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic itself, all of which are available online. Claude Code has rapidly gained traction, reportedly increasing its user base tenfold since its initial launch in May. The tool is now responsible for generating over $500 million in annual revenue for Anthropic. Cat Wu, Anthropic’s Product Manager, noted in a TechCrunch interview that the success of Claude Code largely stems from the company’s advanced AI models, which have resonated with developers. Wu emphasized that the team intentionally incorporates elements of enjoyment into the product. Looking ahead, Wu stated that while the terminal will remain the core platform for Claude Code, the company aims to enhance its presence in web and mobile formats. "Our goal is to ensure that the CLI product remains the most intelligent and customizable option for utilizing coding agents," Wu explained. Notably, Anthropic claims that 90% of Claude Code’s content is generated by its AI models. Wu, who previously worked as an engineer, mentioned that she now primarily reviews the outputs produced by Claude Code, rather than writing code manually. Early iterations of AI coding tools functioned similarly to autocomplete, assisting developers in completing lines of code. However, Claude Code and similar tools allow developers to deploy agents that operate independently, transforming the role of software engineers into more of a managerial position overseeing AI-driven coding assistance. While this evolution has not been universally embraced, with some studies indicating that certain engineers may find themselves less efficient using these tools, Anthropic is committed to advancing its AI coding solutions. CEO Dario Amodei has even suggested that AI could eventually handle 90% of coding tasks for software engineers, though the broader adoption of this technology may take time.
