The AI legal services industry is heating up. Anthropic is getting in on the action.

On Tuesday, Anthropic revealed its latest suite of chatbot features aimed at revolutionizing assistance for law firms. This rollout expands upon Claude for Legal, a specialized offering introduced earlier this year, now equipped with a variety of legal plugins and MCP connectors tailored for distinct legal sectors. The announcement comes at a time when competition within the legal AI sphere is intensifying. Notably, in March, the AI-driven legal startup Harvey secured $200 million in funding, reaching an impressive valuation of $11 billion. In a similar vein, rival startup Legora recently raised $600 million in a Series D funding round, launching an eye-catching ad campaign featuring actor Jude Law. Legora and Harvey both focus on automating complex legal workflows, streamlining processes that typically require extensive human involvement. Anthropic's new offerings aim to assist law firms in automating various clerical tasks, including document searches, case law research, deposition preparation, and document drafting. The newly introduced plugins bundle a range of functions and automated tools designed for diverse legal fields such as commercial, privacy, corporate, employment, and AI governance, according to the company’s statement. Additionally, Anthropic is introducing several model context protocol (MCP) connectors that enable AI models to interact directly with specific data sources and third-party systems. These new MCP connectors seamlessly integrate Claude into commonly used software applications within law firms, such as document management platforms like DocuSign and file search systems like Box. Legal research databases, including Thomson Reuters’ Westlaw, can also be incorporated. These enhancements are accessible to all paying customers of Claude. The new features build on previous plugins aimed at the legal sector that were rolled out earlier this year. A spokesperson emphasized the urgency for the legal industry to embrace AI, stating, "Firms and in-house teams that adapt quickly are gaining a significant advantage. Claude is deepening its involvement in knowledge work, with the legal sector emerging as one of its most crucial and rapidly expanding areas." Despite the potential benefits, the integration of AI into legal practices has not been without controversy. Numerous lawyers have faced repercussions for using AI to produce flawed legal documents, including a notable case where an attorney was fined for employing ChatGPT to draft an appeal filled with fictitious citations. Federal judges have also been criticized for utilizing AI in drafting rulings, a trend that sparked significant attention from Congressional leaders last year. Additionally, AI-generated lawsuits are reportedly inundating courts, creating backlogs with poorly constructed legal arguments.
