Anthropic's latest hiring spree reveals where it's building AI data centers next

In a bid to enhance its AI computing capabilities in the Asia-Pacific region, Anthropic is actively recruiting talent to support its growing infrastructure needs. The U.S.-based AI company is currently seeking to fill 13 positions within its compute department, with a notable eight roles located in Australia and Japan. In Japan, the company is looking to hire for two key positions focused on securing data center agreements and a data center electrical engineer. Meanwhile, Australia has six open positions dedicated to data center engineers and operators. Earlier this year, Anthropic also sought to fill a role for data center deal sourcing in Australia, reflecting its commitment to bolstering operations in the region. Despite recent tensions with the U.S. government regarding the deployment of its AI models, Anthropic continues to experience significant growth. In May, the AI lab successfully raised $65 billion, achieving a valuation of $965 billion, with a revenue run-rate exceeding $47 billion. This rapid expansion has created challenges for the company’s infrastructure, particularly as demand for its consumer and enterprise products surges. As part of its international growth strategy, Anthropic's job listings highlight its ambitious plans for expanding AI computing capacity, especially in Australia, which is perceived as an attractive location due to its vast land, renewable energy potential, and stable political environment. According to David Wroe from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, Australia's geographic distance from military conflicts and its role in the Five Eyes intelligence alliance enhance its appeal as a secure location for AI infrastructure development. However, challenges remain. Wroe noted that Australia's copyright laws pose significant risks for AI companies, as they could face lawsuits from content rights holders. Some Australian politicians are even advocating against exemptions for AI firms that wish to utilize content for training AI models. Anthropic has expressed a strategic approach towards international capacity expansion, emphasizing partnerships with democratic nations that have supportive legal and regulatory frameworks. While specific salary ranges for Australian and Japanese positions have not been disclosed, a London-based role for data center deal sourcing offered salaries between £225,000 and £270,000 ($296,854-$355,253), reflecting the high demand for engineering and technical expertise in the data center sector. Japan is also becoming a focal point for AI infrastructure investment, with Microsoft recently announcing a $10 billion commitment to developing AI facilities in the country. Analysts highlight Japan’s political stability, reliable power grid, and skilled workforce as key factors driving investment. However, challenges related to energy access persist, impacting the feasibility of data center projects across the Asia-Pacific region.
