Anthropic expands into healthcare a week after OpenAI launched a similar product

Anthropic is making significant strides in the healthcare and life sciences sector with the introduction of its latest offering, Claude for Healthcare. This initiative comes as AI companies compete to integrate large language models into regulated medical workflows more effectively. Announced on Sunday, Claude for Healthcare enables healthcare providers, insurers, and patients to leverage Claude for various medical applications, all supported by HIPAA-compliant infrastructure. This launch builds on the previous Claude for Life Sciences, which was concentrated on research and drug development, marking Anthropic's ongoing effort to establish its AI models as valuable tools in regulated markets. The introduction of Claude for Healthcare also highlights the intensifying competition within the healthcare AI landscape. Recently, OpenAI unveiled a competing product, while startups like Abridge and Sword Health have garnered multibillion-dollar valuations as investment in AI healthcare solutions surges. Anthropic aims for Claude to alleviate administrative burdens and enhance understanding of medical information for both healthcare professionals and patients. The new tools are powered by advancements in Claude Opus 4.5, Anthropic's flagship model, which reportedly outperforms earlier iterations in simulated medical and scientific tasks and exhibits fewer factual inaccuracies. As part of this healthcare initiative, Claude now connects directly to several essential databases, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Coverage Database, ICD-10 coding data, the National Provider Identifier Registry, and PubMed's biomedical research library. These integrations allow Claude to efficiently provide relevant information, help streamline prior authorization processes, and assist clinicians and administrators in generating reports with greater speed. Additionally, Anthropic is rolling out customizable "Agent Skills," which include tools designed to facilitate prior authorization requests and support developers in creating applications using the FHIR standard for data exchange in healthcare. On the consumer front, Claude is set to integrate features that enable U.S. subscribers on Pro and Max plans to grant secure access to their personal health records. New connectors introduced include HealthEx and Function Health, with beta integrations for Apple HealthKit and Android Health Connect anticipated to launch through Claude's mobile applications. Anthropic assured that data accessed through these integrations will not be stored in Claude's memory or utilized for model training. Furthermore, the company's expansion in life sciences is accompanied by new connectors to platforms like Medidata, ClinicalTrials.gov, and bioRxiv. New agent skills will assist in drafting FDA- and NIH-compliant clinical trial protocols and monitoring trial performance, further solidifying Claude's role in the healthcare sector.
