Anthropic now has more business customers than OpenAI, according to Ramp data

In a significant development within the AI industry, Anthropic has surpassed OpenAI in the number of verified business customers for the first time, as revealed by the latest AI Index from fintech firm Ramp. The report indicates that 34.4% of the businesses surveyed are now utilizing Anthropic's services, outpacing OpenAI's 32.3%. This shift marks a pivotal moment for Anthropic, which has consistently been gaining traction among sectors such as finance, technology, and professional services. Ara Kharazian, an economist at Ramp, shared insights with TechCrunch, noting that while Anthropic leads in high-adoption sectors, OpenAI still maintains a strong presence in other areas. However, the gap between the two has been narrowing in recent months. It’s worth noting that the index reflects only companies using Ramp, which may not fully represent the broader market. Nevertheless, with a sample size exceeding 50,000 businesses, the data provides a compelling look at industry trends. The trends observed over the past year reveal a remarkable transformation for Anthropic. In May 2025, only 9% of businesses were utilizing its products, a figure that surged by 26% within the following year. Conversely, OpenAI experienced a slight decline of 1% in its customer base during the same timeframe, even as overall AI adoption among businesses rose by 9%. While Kharazian expressed some skepticism regarding the sustainability of Anthropic's newfound lead, he acknowledged the effectiveness of the company's strategy. "Anthropic’s approach has been successful," he stated, emphasizing their focus on a technical customer base and the development of tailored solutions. This strategy has allowed them to effectively expand their offerings through tools like Cowork, indicating a promising future ahead for the company.
