Anthropic appoints Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar to its independent trust

On Tuesday, Anthropic announced the addition of Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, a prominent figure in legal and international affairs, to its Long-Term Benefit Trust. This independent governance body plays a crucial role in selecting board members and advising the company’s leadership. Cuéllar's impressive background includes service in three U.S. presidential administrations, a tenure as a Justice on the Supreme Court of California, and his current role as chair of the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation. Additionally, he is expected to transition from his position as president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in July to focus on leadership roles at Stanford University. In light of rapid advancements in AI technology, Cuéllar emphasized the increasing urgency for governance frameworks that align private sector innovation with public responsibility. His appointment comes alongside the conclusion of terms for two other Trust members, Kanika Bahl, CEO of Evidence Action, and Zachary Robinson, CEO of the Centre for Effective Altruism, both of whom were foundational members since the Trust's inception. Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI research leaders, Anthropic initially included a preliminary version of the Long-Term Benefit Trust in its Series A investment documents, with detailed revelations about its structure emerging in 2023. Notably, the Trust members do not hold financial stakes in Anthropic, which has seen its valuation soar to $350 billion. New trustees are appointed through a collaborative process involving current trustees and the company. The Trust is designed to help Anthropic maximize the advantages of advanced AI while addressing its associated risks. Daniela Amodei, Anthropic's President, remarked on the importance of having leaders with extensive experience contemplating technology’s societal impact. She also expressed gratitude towards Bahl and Robinson for their significant contributions during the Trust’s early days.
