Anthropic appoints a national security expert to its governing trust

In a strategic move to enhance its governance, Anthropic has appointed Richard Fontaine, a respected expert in national security, to its long-term benefit trust. This decision follows the company's recent announcement of new AI models tailored for U.S. national security applications. Anthropic's long-term benefit trust serves as a unique governance framework aimed at prioritizing safety over profits, with the authority to elect members of the company's board of directors. Fontaine will join notable figures such as Zachary Robinson, CEO of the Centre for Effective Altruism, Neil Buddy Shah, CEO of the Clinton Health Access Initiative, and Kanika Bahl, President of Evidence Action. In a statement, Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, expressed that Fontaine's expertise will significantly enhance the trust's capacity to navigate complex AI-related security decisions. He emphasized that the timing of Fontaine's appointment is critical as advanced AI technologies increasingly intersect with national security. Amodei remarked, "I’ve long believed that ensuring democratic nations maintain leadership in responsible AI development is essential for both global security and the common good." Fontaine, who will not hold any financial stake in Anthropic as a trustee, brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as a foreign policy advisor to the late Senator John McCain and as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, focusing on security studies. For over six years, he led the Center for A New American Security, a prominent national security think tank based in Washington, D.C. Anthropic is actively pursuing opportunities within the national security sector to diversify its revenue streams. Recently, the company partnered with Palantir and Amazon Web Services, aiming to provide its AI solutions to defense clients. Notably, Anthropic is not alone in this endeavor; other leading AI laboratories, including OpenAI and Meta, are also exploring defense contracts, while Google works on a version of its Gemini AI for classified environments. Fontaine’s appointment aligns with Anthropic's broader strategy of strengthening its leadership team, following the addition of Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings to its board in May.
