In a significant legal resolution, Anthropic has agreed to pay a minimum of $1.5 billion to settle a class action lawsuit filed by a group of authors. The authors alleged that the artificial intelligence startup unlawfully accessed their literary works. As part of the settlement, Anthropic will compensate approximately $3,000 for each book involved, along with accrued interest, and will also eliminate the datasets that reportedly contained the disputed material. This lawsuit has garnered considerable attention from AI startups and media entities eager to understand the implications of copyright infringement in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. If the settlement receives court approval, it could mark the largest publicly disclosed copyright recovery in history. "This settlement sends a powerful message to AI companies and creators alike that taking copyrighted works from these pirate websites is wrong," stated Justin Nelson, the plaintiffs' attorney, in a comment to CNBC. The lawsuit was initiated in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California last year by authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson. The suit accused Anthropic of large-scale copyright infringement for downloading and commercially utilizing books obtained from allegedly pirated datasets. Earlier this year, a judge ruled that Anthropic's use of these books for training its AI models could be classified as "fair use." However, the court ordered a trial to evaluate whether the company violated copyright laws by sourcing works from the Library Genesis and Pirate Library Mirror databases. The trial was scheduled to occur in December, according to the recent filing. Adding to its prominence, Anthropic recently announced the closure of a $13 billion funding round, valuing the company at an impressive $183 billion. This funding was spearheaded by Iconiq, Fidelity Management, and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
