Anthropic to restore access to Fable 5 after negotiations with White House

Anthropic is poised to restore access to its advanced AI model, Fable 5, after resolving a significant dispute with the Trump administration that had led to its suspension. The company announced on X that the Department of Commerce has lifted export controls that previously restricted access to both Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The controversy began on June 12 when Anthropic was compelled to abruptly disable access to these models due to an export control order from the Trump administration. This order mandated that foreign nationals, including Anthropic's own employees, be denied access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Mythos 5, the latest iteration of the Claude Mythos Preview, had not yet been broadly released, as Anthropic deemed its hacking capabilities too potent for public use. In response to the export order, which Anthropic argued stemmed from a misunderstanding regarding a potential Fable 5 'jailbreak,' company officials undertook a trip to Washington D.C. to negotiate a resolution. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by leading AI firms in their interactions with governmental authorities. Earlier this year, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth labeled Anthropic as a supply chain risk, prompting the company to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration to contest this classification, a case that is still in progress. As Anthropic navigates this complex relationship with the government, it is also preparing for a potential IPO, with the possibility of going public later this year. On June 1, the company confidentially submitted its S-1 draft, marking a significant step toward an initial public offering. Moreover, Anthropic's Mythos AI model has garnered global attention due to its capabilities, prompting the company to initially limit the release of the Claude Mythos Preview to a select group of companies under Project Glasswing, aimed at allowing businesses to strengthen their cybersecurity measures. This recent development coincides with President Trump's AI executive order, which enables major AI firms to voluntarily allow the U.S. government to review advanced models up to 30 days prior to their public release, reflecting the growing scrutiny in the AI sector.
