Anthropic raises $65 Billion, nears $1T valuation ahead of IPO

In a significant move for the AI sector, Anthropic has successfully raised $65 billion in its latest funding round, achieving a remarkable post-money valuation of $965 billion. This funding round, labeled Series H, is anticipated to be the final private capital raise for the company before it makes its public market entrance. The funding was co-led by prominent investment firms including Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, Sequoia Capital, Capital Group, Coatue, and D1 Capital Partners. Notably, institutional investors such as Baillie Gifford, Blackstone, Brookfield, D.E. Shaw Ventures, DST Global, and Fidelity Management & Research also contributed to this substantial round. Additionally, key infrastructure partners like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron joined in, showcasing a diverse interest in Anthropic's vision. Among the raised capital, $15 billion came from previously committed investments from major players in the tech industry, including a notable $5 billion investment from Amazon, which was announced earlier in April. Reports indicated that investors were eager to be part of this funding, with one institutional investor reportedly ready to pledge $5 billion just to secure a meeting with Anthropic's CFO, Krishna Rao. The funds will be directed towards enhancing safety research, improving interpretability in AI, and expanding computational resources to meet the increasing demand for Anthropic's Claude model. This funding coincided with the release of Anthropic's new Claude Opus 4.8 model, which boasts enhanced capabilities in agentic tasks, advanced coding, and a focus on honesty and self-correction. Moreover, the company is poised to introduce models comparable to its powerful cybersecurity offering, Mythos, which has been cautiously released due to safety concerns. Anthropic has experienced notable growth since its previous funding round, especially among enterprise clients who are leveraging the Claude Code. The company reported its run rate revenue surpassing $47 billion this month, with expectations of a remarkable 130% revenue increase leading to its first operational profit. Brad Gerstner, the Founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital, emphasized the significant advancements in Claude, stating that these enhancements have spurred widespread adoption among demanding organizations. This momentum positions Anthropic to take a leading role in the forthcoming phase of AI innovation, capturing substantial opportunities in the evolving landscape. As Anthropic gears up for its public offering, it finds itself in fierce competition with OpenAI, which recently raised an astounding $122 billion, achieving an $852 billion valuation. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's SpaceX, which has merged with xAI, is aiming for a staggering $2 trillion valuation in its upcoming IPO, seeking to raise over $75 billion.
