Anthropic raises $13 billion funding round at $183 billion valuation

Anthropic has announced a significant milestone, successfully closing a funding round that raised $13 billion, resulting in a staggering post-money valuation of $183 billion. This valuation marks a remarkable increase, tripling the company's worth since its previous funding round in March. The latest investment was spearheaded by notable firms such as Iconiq, Fidelity Management & Research Company, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Additional support came from investors including Altimeter, General Catalyst, and Coatue, showcasing a strong interest in the company's vision and potential. Krishna Rao, Anthropic's finance chief, expressed optimism about the funding, stating that it reflects the exceptional confidence that investors have in the company’s financial trajectory and the collaborative efforts that will drive further growth. The startup has seen its valuation surge since introducing its AI assistant, Claude, earlier this year. Founded by former executives from OpenAI, including CEO Dario Amodei, Anthropic stands as a significant contender in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, competing directly with OpenAI. The latter gained widespread attention following the launch of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, in 2022 and is currently preparing for a secondary stock sale that could value it at approximately $500 billion. As of August, Anthropic reported an impressive run-rate revenue exceeding $5 billion, a substantial rise from around $1 billion at the year's start. The company now serves over 300,000 business customers, reflecting its expanding footprint in the market. The newly acquired funds will be directed towards enhancing safety research, accommodating increasing enterprise demand, and facilitating international growth.
