As job losses loom, Anthropic launches program to track AI’s economic fallout

In the heart of Silicon Valley, discussions surrounding the transformative potential of generative AI have intensified, particularly regarding its ability to create innovative job opportunities and elevate economic growth. However, this optimism is tempered by the looming threat of job displacement that many experts predict. Against this backdrop, Anthropic has unveiled its Economic Futures Program, aimed at investigating the effects of AI on the labor market and the broader economy while formulating policy recommendations to navigate this transition. "People are increasingly questioning the economic implications of AI, both positive and negative," stated Sarah Heck, Anthropic's head of policy programs and partnerships, in an interview with TechCrunch. "It’s crucial that our discussions are backed by solid evidence rather than preconceived notions of what might occur." Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has notably weighed in on these economic forecasts, suggesting that AI could potentially eliminate half of entry-level white-collar positions, leading to unemployment rates soaring as high as 20% within the next five years. When asked if mitigating AI-induced job losses is a priority for the Economic Futures Program, Heck emphasized the dual-edged nature of AI’s impact. "Our primary objective is to understand the actual developments," she explained. "Should job losses occur, we aim to assemble a diverse group of experts to explore mitigation strategies. Conversely, if substantial GDP growth materializes, we need to engage policymakers to discuss how to leverage that growth effectively. We do not view this as a one-size-fits-all issue." The newly launched program expands on Anthropic’s Economic Index, which was introduced in February. This initiative makes available aggregated and anonymized data to examine the long-term effects of AI on the economy and labor markets—data that many competitors keep under wraps. The program will focus on three key areas: providing grants for researchers analyzing AI’s impact on labor and productivity, facilitating discussions to develop policy proposals for addressing AI’s economic effects, and constructing datasets to monitor AI's economic influence. To kickstart the program, Anthropic has initiated applications for rapid grants of up to $50,000 for empirical research on AI’s economic ramifications, as well as proposals for evidence-based policy discussions at upcoming symposia in Washington, D.C., and Europe this fall. The organization is also looking to partner with independent research institutions, offering resources like Claude API credits to assist in their research efforts. Heck highlighted that Anthropic seeks individuals and teams capable of producing high-quality data rapidly, with an emphasis on completing research within a six-month timeframe, even if it isn’t peer-reviewed. For the symposia, the company is eager for policy ideas from a wide range of perspectives, with an interest in understanding the evolving nature of work and the emergence of new, unforeseen job roles. Moreover, Heck expressed interest in investigating AI's implications for fiscal policy, particularly concerning shifts in how businesses perceive value creation. "We want to cast a wide net regarding potential research topics," she remarked. "While labor is a significant focus, the scope is much broader." This initiative from Anthropic reflects a growing trend among tech companies to address the disruptions they are helping to create, whether motivated by reputational concerns, genuine altruism, or a combination of both. For example, Lyft recently launched a forum to gather feedback from human drivers as they begin integrating robotaxis into their services.
