Anthropic has unveiled a beta version of Claude for Word, marking a significant move to challenge Microsoft's dominance in the software industry while targeting the legal sector. Having previously integrated Claude into Excel and PowerPoint, the AI startup is now focusing on document-centric tasks crucial for legal professionals. The new add-in aims to enhance productivity for those engaged in legal reviews, drafting financial memos, and performing iterative edits. According to Anthropic, Claude for Word enables users to pose questions about their documents and receive answers that include clickable section citations for easy navigation. Additional features include the ability to edit selected text without altering surrounding styles, numbering, or formatting. The “tracked changes mode” allows users to either accept or reject edits as part of the revision process, streamlining collaborative efforts. Furthermore, Claude can navigate comment threads, making edits to the anchored text and providing responses to what has been changed. To illustrate its capabilities, Anthropic shared examples of how lawyers might utilize Claude when reviewing legal contracts. Currently, this tool is accessible exclusively to Team and Enterprise plan subscribers. With this launch and other recent initiatives, Anthropic is clearly signaling its ambition to expand beyond its initial developer-focused identity, aiming to integrate Claude into various enterprise functions, including finance, human resources, analytics, and executive operations.
