Anthropic has initiated a policy requiring certain users of its AI chatbot, Claude, to verify their identity with government-issued identification. This new measure could result in account suspensions for those found violating the terms of service. The company has recently rolled out an “identity verification” system that mandates users to submit a government ID—such as a passport or driver’s license—along with a live selfie in specific situations. Currently, this requirement is limited to a select number of use cases, as detailed in their Help Center. According to an Anthropic spokesperson, the ID checks are implemented when user activity raises concerns. "This applies to a small number of cases where we see activity that indicates potentially fraudulent or abusive behavior, which violates our usage policy," the spokesperson stated, as reported by Business Insider. Users found guilty of such actions may face restrictions on their access to Claude. The Help Center notes that accounts could be banned due to various reasons, including repeated violations of usage policies, account creation from unapproved locations, and unauthorized access by individuals under 18 years of age. Regarding data management, Anthropic asserts that it maintains control over how identity data is utilized and stored. However, the actual collection and management of this data are carried out by Persona Identities, a third-party verification service. Persona is bound by contract to use the data solely for verification support and enhancing fraud prevention capabilities. Anthropic also emphasized its commitment to data privacy, stating, "We are not collecting more than we need," and clarified that it does not utilize ID verification data to train its AI models or share it beyond Anthropic and Persona, except when legally mandated. This recent development has sparked criticism among some users of Claude, particularly on social media platforms like X. Many have expressed their discontent over the ID verification requirement, with some users comparing the situation to themes from George Orwell's '1984.' The rollout has raised concerns that it could give competitors an edge as other AI platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini do not impose similar verification processes.
