On Friday, as discussions were underway for an interview, a significant news alert appeared: the Trump administration announced it was cutting ties with Anthropic, the San Francisco-based AI firm established in 2021 by Dario Amodei and other former OpenAI researchers. This decision stems from Anthropic's refusal to permit its technology to be utilized for extensive surveillance of U.S. citizens or for the deployment of autonomous drones capable of lethal decision-making without human oversight. As a consequence, the company is poised to forfeit a contract valued at up to $200 million and will be prohibited from collaborating with other defense contractors. President Trump even directed federal agencies via Truth Social to "immediately cease all use of Anthropic technology." In response, Anthropic has declared its intention to legally challenge the Pentagon, arguing that the designation of supply chain risk is not only legally unfounded but has never been applied to an American company before. Max Tegmark, a prominent physicist and professor at MIT, has spent years warning that the rapid advancement of AI technology is outpacing the global capacity to regulate it effectively. Tegmark, who founded the Future of Life Institute in 2014, played a pivotal role in organizing an open letter in 2023 that called for a halt in the development of advanced AI, garnering over 33,000 signatures, including that of Elon Musk. He critiques Anthropic's predicament, suggesting that the company, like its competitors, has contributed to its current challenges through its reluctance to embrace regulation. The crisis for Anthropic began long before its fallout with the Pentagon, rooted in a broader industry trend of resisting binding regulations. Despite their assurances of responsible governance, companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google DeepMind have failed to uphold their commitments to safety. Recently, Anthropic even abandoned its foundational safety pledge, which promised not to release powerful AI systems until they were assured they would not cause harm. The absence of regulation leaves these companies vulnerable, according to Tegmark, who likened the current state of AI oversight to having less regulation than that of food safety. He argued that if these companies had collectively lobbied for binding regulations early on, they could have avoided their current predicament. Instead, they find themselves in a regulatory vacuum, reminiscent of past corporate missteps that led to public health crises. Tegmark also addressed the common argument that the U.S. must race against China in AI development. He countered this narrative by highlighting that China is instating strict regulations, including potential bans on certain AI technologies, emphasizing a stark contrast in regulatory approaches. As the landscape evolves, Tegmark sees a growing recognition within U.S. national security circles that uncontrollable superintelligence poses a significant threat, potentially comparable to Cold War dynamics. Looking ahead, the pace of AI development appears rapid and unprecedented. Experts previously estimated we were decades away from achieving human-level AI, but advancements have accelerated, with AI now demonstrating capabilities that rival human proficiency in various fields. This raises urgent questions about the future job market for new graduates, as AI continues to evolve towards more advanced systems. With Anthropic now blacklisted, the reactions from other major AI players remain to be seen. Will they align with Anthropic’s stance, or will they pursue opportunities that Anthropic has rejected?
