Anthropic taps former Microsoft India MD to lead Bengaluru expansion

Anthropic, the U.S.-based AI startup, has appointed Irina Ghose, the former managing director of Microsoft India, to spearhead its entry into the Indian market. This strategic move highlights India's growing significance as a battleground for AI firms seeking to expand beyond the U.S. for substantial growth opportunities. Ghose, who boasts 24 years of extensive experience at Microsoft before her departure in December 2025, is expected to leverage her deep connections within local enterprises and government entities. As the company prepares to establish its presence in one of the fastest-growing AI markets globally, India has emerged as a crucial area for Anthropic, already ranking as the second-largest user base for its AI model, Claude. Notably, the usage in India is heavily skewed towards technical tasks such as software development. OpenAI, a direct competitor, is also intensifying its focus on the Indian market, with plans for an office in New Delhi, indicating the competitive environment for generative AI commercialization is heating up. India, home to over a billion internet users and more than 700 million smartphone owners, presents tremendous potential. However, the challenge remains in translating this reach into significant revenue, prompting AI companies to adopt aggressive pricing strategies. Anthropic's Claude app has seen impressive growth, with downloads in India rising 48% in September, totaling around 767,000, while consumer spending surged by 572% to $195,000 for the month. However, these figures are still modest compared to the U.S., where spending reached $2.5 million in September. In October, Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, personally engaged with Indian business leaders and lawmakers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to discuss expansion and the adoption of their tools. The company had also considered a partnership with Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries, but that partnership ultimately shifted to Google, which is now providing its Gemini AI Pro plan for free to Jio subscribers. In her announcement on LinkedIn, Ghose expressed her commitment to collaborating with Indian enterprises, developers, and startups to implement Claude in mission-critical applications. She emphasized the potential of AI tailored for local languages to enhance sectors like education and healthcare, indicating Anthropic’s strategy to broaden its user base beyond early tech adopters. As India’s native GenAI ecosystem is still in its infancy, the country possesses a wealth of software talent and an expanding AI user base. However, few startups are currently focused on developing large foundational models. Investors remain inclined to support application-layer companies, often avoiding the considerable investment needed for frontier AI systems. The timing of Ghose's appointment coincides with the upcoming AI Impact Summit 2026 in February, where Indian officials are expected to gather AI startups, global CEOs, and industry experts to discuss the future of AI deployment in India. This summit is part of a broader initiative by the Indian government to bolster domestic AI development and establish India as a serious contender in the global AI arena, as competition among major markets intensifies. Anthropic is actively building its team in India, with new job postings for roles such as startup and enterprise account executives and a partner sales manager, demonstrating its commitment to deepening market engagement and attracting Indian businesses as clients. This strategic hire is expected to enhance Anthropic’s local leadership as the company aims to transform India’s increasing AI usage into a sustainable business model, navigating an environment where distribution partnerships, pricing strategies, and enterprise adoption will determine the long-term success of AI players.
