Anthropic to set up India office, explores partnership with Reliance: Report

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, is set to visit India this week as the company gears up to establish a new office in Bengaluru. This move is part of a broader strategy to explore a partnership with Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries, as reported by TechCrunch. This development comes amid growing competition in the Indian market, where Anthropic’s main competitor, OpenAI, has been significantly strengthening its presence, citing India as its second-largest market after the United States. Amodei is expected to meet with Ambani and other high-ranking executives from Reliance during his visit to Mumbai. In addition to his meetings in Mumbai, Amodei will travel to New Delhi to engage with key lawmakers and senior officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Following these discussions, he plans to announce the opening of Anthropic’s office in Bengaluru on Thursday, accompanied by Guillaume Princen, the head of EMEA, and Daniel Delaney, the chief of startups. Recent data from Appfigures indicates a remarkable 48% year-over-year growth in downloads of the Claude app on both iOS and Android platforms in India, reaching a total of 767,000 installs this year. Furthermore, consumer spending on the app has surged by 572% compared to the previous year, generating $195,000 in revenue just in September. Earlier this year, OpenAI revealed its intention to launch its first office in New Delhi and began recruiting for a sales and marketing team in India. Meanwhile, Anthropic is positioning itself to attract developers and startups through its new Bengaluru office. OpenAI has also introduced a ₹399 subscription for ChatGPT Go in India, offering users extended access to its upcoming GPT-5 model. Although there are no current indications of similar subscription plans from Anthropic, the company’s Pro plan is available for $17 per month, while its premium Max plan costs $100 per month. Users can access Claude AI for free via the app but must purchase a plan for extended usage or access to advanced models.
