Anthropic opens new office in  Bengaluru, announces partnerships across India

Anthropic, a prominent US-based AI company, has officially launched its inaugural office in Bengaluru, marking a significant step in its growth within one of its most rapidly developing markets. Alongside this expansion, the company has unveiled several partnerships across various sectors, including enterprise solutions, education, and agriculture. India has emerged as the second-largest market for Anthropic's Claude AI platform, with approximately half of its usage focused on critical computational tasks such as application development, system upgrades, and production software deployment. "India represents one of the world’s most promising opportunities to deliver the benefits of responsible AI to a broader audience," stated Irina Ghose, Managing Director for India, highlighting the nation’s robust technical talent and extensive digital infrastructure. In a bid to enhance AI capabilities in India, Anthropic is launching a comprehensive initiative aimed at improving performance in ten major Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, and Urdu. This effort involves creating high-quality, locally relevant datasets to bridge the gap between English and regional language AI functionalities. To evaluate real-world applications, Anthropic is partnering with organizations like Karya and the Collective Intelligence Project, as well as experts from nonprofits such as Digital Green and Adalat AI, with plans to publicly share the results of these evaluations. The demand for Anthropic's services in India has surged, with the company's revenue run-rate doubling since its expansion announcement in October 2025. Enterprises, digital-native companies, and startups have been the primary drivers of this growth. Notably, Air India is utilizing Claude Code to expedite custom software development and cut costs, while CRED has reported significant improvements in feature delivery and testing through the platform. Additionally, Cognizant is integrating this technology to modernize its legacy systems for over 350,000 employees worldwide. In the startup ecosystem, companies like Razorpay have incorporated AI into their risk and operations processes, while Enterpret has adopted Claude across its engineering and product development. Emergent is also experiencing rapid growth, achieving $25 million in annual recurring revenue and reaching two million users within five months, all leveraging Claude-powered solutions. In the education sector, applications account for roughly 12% of Claude’s activities in India. Anthropic has partnered with Pratham to establish its first strategic AI lab, piloting an AI-enabled “Anytime Testing Machine” with 1,500 students across 20 schools, with plans to expand to 100 schools by 2026, including initiatives aimed at supporting women re-entering education. The company is also collaborating with the Central Square Foundation to assist organizations in developing AI tools for underserved learner populations. In agriculture, Anthropic is working with the EkStep Foundation on the OpenAgriNet initiative to bring expert farming knowledge to rural areas. In the legal sector, support for Adalat AI includes plans for a national WhatsApp-based helpline designed to provide case updates, translations, document summaries, and access to legal resources in Indian languages. The new Bengaluru office, Anthropic's second location in Asia after Tokyo, will focus on hiring for various technical, research, and business roles. The establishment of this hub reinforces Anthropic's commitment to fostering AI adoption in India across business, public service, and social impact sectors, with a focus on safety, localization, and inclusive access.
