Anthropic takes aim at OpenAI, offers Claude to ‘all three branches of government’ for $1

In a bold move following OpenAI's recent announcement, Anthropic has stepped up to offer its AI model, Claude, to every branch of the U.S. government for a mere $1. This initiative is not limited to just the executive branch, as it aims to provide a comprehensive solution to the legislative and judiciary branches as well. The offer, which will be available for a year, comes on the heels of Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google DeepMind being added to the General Services Administration’s list of approved AI vendors for federal agencies. This escalation by Anthropic serves as a strategic maneuver to enhance its presence in the federal AI landscape, especially after OpenAI's attempt to lower prices to gain a competitive edge. “Access to advanced AI is vital for the U.S. public sector to address complex issues, from scientific endeavors to constituent services,” Anthropic stated. The company plans to provide both Claude for Enterprise and Claude for Government, the latter designed to meet FedRAMP High security requirements, which allows federal personnel to work with sensitive unclassified information safely. Anthropic's commitment includes technical support for agencies looking to seamlessly integrate AI into their operations. With up to $200 million in funding from the Department of Defense, the company is not solely focused on national security but also aims to support various sectors, including scientific research and health services. Claude’s capabilities are already being utilized at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to expedite scientific research and by the District of Columbia Department of Health to enhance access to health services in multiple languages. Anthropic emphasizes that Claude adheres to the stringent security protocols required by the government. Additionally, customers can access Claude through existing secure infrastructures thanks to partnerships with major cloud providers like AWS, Google Cloud, and Palantir, allowing for greater control over their data. In contrast, OpenAI’s current FedRAMP High offering is predominantly tied to Azure Government Cloud, which may not meet the data sovereignty and flexibility needs of all government agencies. However, OpenAI is actively working to diversify its cloud infrastructure in response to these challenges.
