In a significant shift within the AI landscape, research lab Anthropic has emerged as the preferred provider of AI models for enterprises, overtaking OpenAI. A recent report by Menlo Ventures indicates that Anthropic now commands a substantial 32% share of the enterprise large language model market by usage, while OpenAI follows closely with 25%. This change marks a stark reversal from just a couple of years ago when OpenAI held a commanding 50% market share among enterprises compared to Anthropic's 12%. Since 2023, OpenAI has experienced a notable decline in its market presence, whereas Anthropic's share has consistently increased. In the coding sector, Anthropic's models dominate even more aggressively, capturing 42% of the enterprise market in this area—more than double OpenAI's 21%. The impressive rise in Anthropic’s usage can be attributed to the successful launch of its Claude 3.5 Sonnet model in June 2024, which laid the groundwork for its growing popularity. The subsequent release of Claude 3.7 Sonnet in February 2025 further propelled this momentum. Industry insiders have noted a preference for Anthropic's Claude model among enterprise and startup developers, reinforcing the findings of the Menlo Ventures report. Meanwhile, OpenAI continues to maintain a stronghold in the consumer market, reporting over 2.5 billion daily prompts sent to ChatGPT. The report also highlights a trend among enterprises favoring closed models, a category that both Anthropic and OpenAI fall into. It found that more than half of the enterprises surveyed do not engage with open-source models. As of mid-2025, only 13% of enterprise daily workloads utilized open-source models, a drop from 19% at the start of the year. Meta remains a key player in the open-source market, despite this trend toward closed models.
