In a significant move, Anthropic has announced that it will take responsibility for the rising costs associated with electricity for its data centers. The company declared, "We will pay for 100% of the grid upgrades needed to interconnect our data centers," in a blog post released on Wednesday. This decision aims to alleviate financial pressure on American households that could arise from increased electricity prices. To ensure that electricity prices remain stable, Anthropic plans to secure additional power sources and invest in advanced grid optimization tools. The company emphasized the urgency of developing new data centers swiftly to uphold the nation’s competitiveness in AI and national security. "AI companies shouldn’t leave American ratepayers to pick up the tab," the statement read. This announcement follows Anthropic's prior commitment to invest $50 billion in AI infrastructure across the United States, starting with new data centers in Texas and New York. The tech industry is currently undergoing a massive expansion of data center capacity, which has sparked concerns over rising electricity costs. In November, Meta pledged a staggering $600 billion toward AI technology, infrastructure, and workforce development in the U.S. Similarly, Apple announced an additional $100 billion investment in its U.S. infrastructure, bringing its total commitment to $600 billion. Amid this growth, utility bills continue to increase; electric and gas companies requested $31 billion in rate hikes last year—more than double the previous year's requests—according to a report by PowerLines. The surging demand from data centers has been identified as a significant contributor to these rate increases. Former President Donald Trump has urged major tech firms to ensure that data centers do not lead to higher electricity costs for consumers, stating, "I never want Americans to pay higher electricity bills because of data centers." Microsoft has also initiated measures to address similar concerns by committing to pay utility rates that cover its data centers' energy use while minimizing the impact on local communities.
