Anthropic has taken a significant step forward by naming Irina Ghose, the former managing director of Microsoft India, as its new managing director for the Indian market. This move comes as the U.S.-based artificial intelligence startup gears up to establish its first office in Bengaluru, aiming to strengthen its presence in one of its fastest-growing regions. With an impressive three-decade career in the technology sector, Ghose has a proven track record. At Microsoft India, she played a pivotal role in promoting the adoption of artificial intelligence across various industries, including banking, healthcare, manufacturing, and government. In her new role, Ghose will focus on forming Anthropic's local leadership team, enhancing partnerships with enterprises and government bodies, and fostering collaboration with developers and researchers throughout the country. In her statement, she emphasized the unique opportunity India has to influence the development and deployment of AI technologies at scale. "Organizations in India are moving from experimentation to practical applications of AI, where trust, safety, and long-term impacts are just as critical as innovation," she remarked. Anthropic, which counts Amazon and Google among its backers, is known for developing the Claude series of large language models that rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. As demand for generative AI continues to surge among businesses and governmental entities, India has emerged as Anthropic's second-largest market for Claude.ai. According to the company's latest Economic Index report, nearly half of all Claude usage in India is tied to computer science and mathematics tasks, underscoring the country's robust developer talent and burgeoning demand for technical AI solutions. Chris Ciauri, Anthropic’s managing director of international operations, praised Ghose’s extensive experience in scaling tech businesses and her ability to drive enterprise transformation. He stated, "As we expand our teams and engage more deeply with India’s public and private sectors, Irina will ensure that our strategies are informed by local insights and aligned with our overarching mission." The newly formed Indian team at Anthropic is set to collaborate closely with policymakers and academic institutions, as well as build partnerships with local enterprises. They aim to leverage AI to tackle specific challenges faced by diverse communities across India, including those related to the country's many languages and cultures.
