The White House characterized this encounter as an 'introductory meeting' that yielded productive results. They noted that discussions focused on potential collaborations and strategies to tackle the challenges associated with scaling AI technology. In a parallel announcement, Anthropic confirmed that Amodei engaged in meaningful discussions with senior officials on vital shared objectives, such as enhancing cybersecurity, maintaining America's competitive edge in AI, and ensuring AI safety. The company expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of furthering these discussions. The friction between Anthropic and the Pentagon reportedly stems from unsuccessful negotiations concerning military applications of Anthropic's technology, as the company aims to impose safeguards on its use related to fully autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. Following this, the Pentagon labeled Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, a designation that typically applies to foreign adversaries, potentially restricting the use of its models by government entities. Anthropic is currently contesting this classification in court. Nevertheless, it appears that the broader Trump administration is open to utilizing Anthropic’s technology, as sources indicate that 'every agency' except the Department of Defense is keen to collaborate.
