Anthropic quietly doubles its estimate for how much engineers can expect to spend on Claude Code tokens

In a recent update, Anthropic has significantly revised its estimates regarding the cost of using Claude Code, a popular tool among developers. The company now indicates that average spending per developer has more than doubled, increasing from $6 to $13 per active day. This change affects both enterprise developers and general users, with costs for about 90% of users remaining below $30 per day. According to the updated information on Claude Code’s website, enterprise deployments now average around $150 to $250 per developer each month. Anthropic advises teams to start with a small pilot group to gauge their specific expenses before a wider implementation. The alteration in pricing comes amidst a broader trend of rising costs in the AI sector, which is impacting users ranging from individual developers to large corporations. The surge in demand for AI capabilities, particularly from AI agents, has put significant pressure on providers like Anthropic to meet computational needs. This pricing update was first highlighted by Ed Zitron, CEO of EZPR, on X, who noted the adjustments made to the Claude Code documentation. As the AI landscape evolves, these changes underscore the challenges faced by both consumers and developers in managing costs associated with advanced technologies. Moreover, last week, Anthropic faced backlash when it became apparent that Claude Code was temporarily unavailable for Pro users on the pricing page. The company clarified that this was part of a test affecting just 2% of new users. Additionally, Amol Avasare, Anthropic's head of growth, acknowledged that the current subscription plans were not designed to accommodate the increased engagement they are now witnessing from users. 'We've made small adjustments along the way,' Avasare stated, yet the surge in usage has prompted a reevaluation of their service offerings.
