Antarctica is starting to look a lot like Greenland—and that isn’t good

In the 1990s, while the Greenland Ice Sheet and the Arctic were visibly succumbing to the effects of human-induced climate change, Antarctica's vast ice cap appeared to remain largely unaffected. However, this perception has drastically changed. As global temperatures continue to rise, the effects of warming are now being felt at both poles, with Antarctica’s glaciers, ice shelves, and sea ice displaying alarming signs of vulnerability. Recent studies, utilizing both satellite imagery and ground observations, have uncovered troubling evidence of a significant meltdown in Antarctica, reminiscent of what has been observed in Greenland. These findings indicate increased surface melting, rapidly moving glaciers, and a decline in sea ice extent. Scientists are raising concerns that this phenomenon, dubbed “Greenlandification,” could lead to dire consequences, including heightened sea level rise and major alterations in global rainfall and drought patterns. Spanning roughly 5.4 million square miles—an area greater than Europe—the Antarctic ice sheet maintains an average thickness of over a mile and contains 61% of the world's freshwater. If it were to entirely melt, global sea levels could surge by approximately 190 feet. Notably, the western section of this ice sheet is particularly at risk, with enough ice to elevate sea levels by more than 10 feet. Reflecting on the past, ice researcher Ruth Mottram from the Danish Meteorological Institute noted that just thirty years ago, students were assured that the Antarctic ice sheets would remain stable and resistant to melting. However, her research, published in a recent paper in Nature Geoscience, highlights the accelerating ice loss and growing parallels between the changes observed in the northern and southern polar regions.
