Anduril doubles valuation to over $60 billion as defense tech funding boom continues

Anduril, a rising star in defense technology, announced on Wednesday that it has secured $5 billion in a recent funding round led by Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz. This substantial investment has propelled the company's valuation to an impressive $61 billion, effectively doubling its worth from $30.5 billion in anticipation of a forthcoming IPO. CEO Brian Schimpf emphasized the company's commitment to expanding its manufacturing capabilities, research initiatives, and infrastructure to enhance U.S. defense systems in light of increasing geopolitical tensions. Founded in 2017 by Oculus headset pioneer Palmer Luckey, Anduril aims to revolutionize a sector that historically attracted minimal venture capital. In recent years, the landscape for defense technology startups has transformed dramatically, with firms like Shield AI and Saronic, among others, garnering significant funding. Schimpf noted, "When we founded Anduril, defense was not a category that attracted significant venture investment. That has changed meaningfully over the last several years." Anduril is strategically positioned to benefit from the U.S. government's initiative to reindustrialize its military capabilities, especially under the Trump administration. The company has recently aligned itself with a consortium tasked with developing space interceptors for the ambitious $185 billion missile defense project known as the Golden Dome. Additionally, Anduril secured a substantial 10-year enterprise contract with the U.S. Army, with a ceiling of $20 billion, and has also acquired a company specializing in space missile and satellite tracking. As it continues to grow, Anduril stands out among Silicon Valley-backed firms shaking up the traditional defense contractor market, which has long been dominated by major players like Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and RTX.
