Brian Schimpf, the CEO of defense technology firm Anduril, expressed that the company is not in a hurry to go public, particularly given the current state of the market. Speaking with CNBC's Julia Boorstin during the Allen & Co. Sun Valley Conference, he emphasized the importance of timing for a successful IPO. "We define a successful IPO as our investors getting a good return three years after going public," Schimpf stated, highlighting concerns about launching during a hype cycle. The demand for defense technology has surged recently, driven by increased military spending, which is projected to reach $1.5 trillion. This boom is partially influenced by former President Donald Trump's push for military reindustrialization. Despite this favorable environment for defense tech companies like Anduril, the broader tech IPO market remains sluggish. For instance, SpaceX's recent IPO initially saw shares peak but has since experienced a significant decline in value. Anduril, known for its innovative drones and AI-enhanced weaponry, saw its valuation double to $61 billion earlier this year, making it one of the highest-valued private tech companies. Schimpf noted the aggressive investment strategies being employed to expand defense systems for the U.S. However, he also cautioned that the current valuations in the market may not reflect rational pricing. As discussions of a potential IPO circulate, questions linger about the right timing for Anduril to enter the public market. Founder Palmer Luckey has indicated a desire to pursue an IPO but has yet to establish a concrete timeline. Schimpf warned that many companies might be approaching dangerously inflated valuations, which could lead to adverse consequences in the future.
